The Four Seasons Punta Mita is glam. It’s tropical. It’s elegant.

But you could say that about scores of Mexican resorts. What makes this Pacific beauty, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, such a prime spot for a destination wedding? Let us count the ways.

1. A better beach ceremony. There are two private beaches to choose from: Cuevas (the big one, where you can set out chairs for 250) and Manzanillas (the small one, where up to 50 of your guests can gasp as you descend the stone pathway). Whichever you choose, the staff will use woven beach mats to carpet the area, meaning your people won’t spend the first 10 minutes after the ceremony scraping sand off their feet. (Of course if you want the reception on the beach—see photo, above—digging your toes in the sand is part of the fun.)

2. Party-friendly villas. Several of the resort’s four- and five-bedroom villas, all overlooking the sea, are sprawling enough to accommodate not just the wedding party, but an entire weekend of events, from welcome margaritas to poolside massages to the day-after brunch.

3. One charming cliff-top venue. The Rock is a tiny promontory overlooking the Pacific, perfect for a tiny wedding (12 guests, max), with waves crashing below and gulls circling on the horizon.

4. One ginormous inside-outside venue.  Takua, the resort’s new event palapa, is an any-weather space that can be air-conditioned in steamy months and features completely retractable walls when you want those Pacific breezes. Set up a Mexican market theme with taco and ceviche stations or an elaborate Frida Kahlo Fiesta—there’s room for 300 partiers.

5. Kid-friendly everything. The under-age set will beg to be included in your wedding plans with a lazy river pool, children’s menus at every restaurant, a free kids’ DVD library, a gelato cart, pint-size robes, and milk and cookies before bed.

6. A new and improved signature cocktail. Instead of a martini renamed in your honor, how about a personalized tequila tasting led by the resort’s Tequila Master, Alfredo Sanchez?

7. A new and improved candy buffet. Instead of glass dispensers filled with Gummi Bears and Twizzlers, the Four Seasons can organize a chocolate tasting inspired by the Olmec and Mayan people.

8. Wonderful welcome bags. If you want to thank your guests for coming with more than a fruit plate, the Four Seasons has some pretty sweet  ideas. A cotton tote embellished with a golden Mayan design, filled with Mexican candy. Little silver jewelry boxes. A tequila bottle personalized with the name of the guest. A piece of intricately beaded Huichol jewelry.

9. Freebies for the wedding couple. Your upgrade to a one-bedroom suite is lovely, and having your dress and his wedding duds pressed free of charge comes in handy, and we’re always happy when our guests are treated to welcome drinks. But for our money the best part of the Four Seasons’ wedding offerings is that any function space you choose is free of charge. (That doesn’t include golf venues, but no worries—there are plenty of sites to choose from.)

10. Wowser activities. A private 55-foot yacht for sunset cocktails as bottlenose dolphins chase the wake. A helicopter ride to the Jose Cuervo distillery in Tequila, Mexico. Surf lessons for the whole crew. Forget Wedding of the Year—we’re talking about a celebration for the ages.
