Entrance to Castell Son Claret, former castle now luxury hotel

The Castell Son Claret is a secluded oasis on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

When imagining a setting for a destination wedding, what’s more romantic than a castle in Spain? It took us a moment to think of something, too. But if the idea appeals, you’ll be interested in the recent opening, on Spain’s Mediterranean island of Mallorca, of the Castell Son Claret, a 38-room luxury hotel that retains much of the feel of the castle it once was.

Although only a short drive from Mallorca’s lively (some would say overly lively) coastal resorts, the stone-walled hotel, some of its building dating back centuries, sits on a secluded 325-acre estate looking out at a mountain range, the Serra de Tramuntana, that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The castle’s former chapel is now a bar, but the grounds are landscaped with courtyards, gardens, terraced pools, and groves of fruit trees that are all able to serve as a perfect ceremony or reception space for up to 350 guests.

A long, palm-lined drive leads up to the turreted main building, but rooms and suites also occupy cottages and former horse stables (fitted out far more elegantly than they were for their original residents). There’s a spa, too, and an in-house restaurant, Chef Fernando Perez Arellano’s Zaranda, which he moved from elsewhere on the island, where it had earned a Michelin star.

The Castell Son Claret is owned by German shipping tycoon Klaus-Michael Kuhne and his wife, Christine. In case you are wondering how someone can afford a castle, Forbes magazine ranked him 121st on their 2013 list of the world’s richest people. But of course to have your own wedding in a castle, just start by imagining it with the right prince. — Bob Payne

Hello I am looking for a castle hotel wedding venue for 21/08/21. I plan to visit Spain in October and view as many venues as possible to put a deposit down. Thanks

    Hi Katie,
Apologies for this late answer to your question. Have you looked at Spain’s paradores? They are castles, monasteries, etc. that have been converted into hotels. Probably worth drilling into. Here’s a link to the main site: https://www.paradores-spain.com/
