Carlyle suite living room

Ideal for a small, sophisticated wedding: the Royal Suite at The Carlyle, New York

If you love the Old World ambience of New York’s classic hotels but would rather leave the 500-guest blowout to the society girls and their parents, we’ve got the place for you: The Carlyle. Yes, it’s big and it’s grand and and it sits smack in the middle of Manhattan’s Silk Stocking District, but it also shelters a number of intimate spaces ideal for a small wedding.

One of the hotel’s most sumptuous choices is the Empire Suite, designed by Thierry Despont (he’s worked on such high profile projects as the Getty Center and the restoration of the Statue of Liberty). The three-bedroom duplex (floors 28 and 29) combines classic Upper East Side elegance (grand piano, floor-brushing curtains, cashmere-covered walls) with a graphic punch that is anything but old fogey. It’s the kind of place you might call home if your ancestors had built railroads or founded an oil company. And that’s the point, really. Invite a handful of guests to your wedding in the 2,600-square-foot-space and  you won’t feel like you’re playing the part of a local—you’ll feel like a member of the tribe. And the unobstructed views of Central Park from the living room’s floor-to-ceiling picture window underscore your insider status.

Follow the wedding with drinks and nibbles in your suite, or if crave another consummate New York experience, repair downstairs for champagne cocktails in Bemelmans Bar, named for Ludwig Bemelmans, the artist and former resident who painted the bar’s murals—and whose work you’ll recognize from his Madeleine books. The drinks have been flowing here for almost 75 years, so if you decide to return to celebrate your 10th (or 4oth) anniversary, you can be fairly sure they’ll be waiting for you.
