The Langham Chicago

Oversize windows provide cityscape views for wedding venues at The Langham, Chicago

When your guest list is truly all over the map, it can become obvious that the only practical venue for a destination wedding is one that’s convenient to a major airport. And more often than not, that means you’ll want to consider a city wedding.

Consider Chicago, for example. For some of us, it may not seem the most romantic place in the world, but for guests who’ve grown up in southern California—or northern Maine—it can seem as exotic as a weekend in the islands— and will be a whole lot easier to get to.

The romantic possibilities for the Second City just rose a notch with the recent opening of The Langham, Chicago, a luxury 316-room hotel occupying 13 floors of a classic 53-story skyscraper designed by Mies van der Rohe, one of the pioneers of modern architecture.

At first glance, romantic may seem an odd term to associate with van der Rohe’s creation, which some Langham guests already know as the IBM building.

Yet despite its commercial setting, the hotel is well suited for wedding celebrations. A legacy of the architect’s mastery of plate glass, some of the venue spaces—capable of accommodating over 300 people—are notable for their exceptionally large windows, looking out across such cityscapes as the Chicago River.

And if your crew enjoys the chew more than the view, The Langham has a David Rockwell-designed restaurant, Travelle, presided over by celebrity chef Tim Graham. You can host the kind of reception your foodie friends will be talking about at the next 10 weddings they attend.

The Langham can also provide your guests with plenty to do, as it’s within walking distance of Grant Park, with diversions including the Buckingham fountain and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the Magnificent Mile’s upscale shops and eateries.

If they just want to chill between wedding events, there’s the  hotel’s Chuan Spa, whose menu of treatments is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Or they can take afternoon tea, Tiffin at The Langham, inspired by tiffin at The Langham in London, while they look out at the Chicago River and imagine that destination wedding travel can be exotic indeed. — Bob Payne
