A JAMAICA WEDDING MIGHT BE PERFECT IF YOU . . .
- Think only good things when you hear the word “jerk”
- Are on the lookout for a reggae version of “Here Comes the Bride”
- Would be delighted if someone proposed a toast by raising a Red Stripe
LAY OF THE LAND
One love, one heart, words from the legendary Jamaican musician Bob Marley, form part of an anthem that could not be more perfect for starting your lives together. The foot-massaging sands will be what you hoped for, the blue waters what you dreamed of, and the lady trying to convince your new husband to get his hair braided the memory you laugh over. Unless you’ve been captivated by Strawberry Hill, which sits high up in the Blue Mountains above Kingston, you’ll probably fly into Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport. There are some excellent, classic destination wedding hotels in the Montego Bay Area; you’ll find plenty to choose from, too, along the white sand beach or sunset-facing cliffs of Negril, about 1.5 hours to the west by taxi, and Ocho Rios, which is about the same distance to the east. If you’re a trailblazer, though, you might carry on east to Port Antonio, whose old-Jamaica feel and outstanding boutique hotels make the 3.5 hour-drive worth it.
