Bright and beachy: Event Design by Marianna Idirin

We love Mexican weddings—everything about them seems a little brighter, a little more joyful than parties back home. We recently spoke with Marianna Idirin, whose event firm in Cabo San Lucas puts together the kind of charming, feel-good celebrations that American brides and grooms crave. She shared her thoughts on the five absolute musts of a great Mexican gathering. Feel free to borrow them, even if you’re marrying in Milwaukee.

1. Tequila! Traveling to Mexico without tasting a great tequila is like dinner in Paris without wine. Every Mexican-themed party must have tequila—shots are fun, but even better is a full tequila tasting bar stocked with lots of colorful bottles.

2. Mexican artcrafts. Mexico has so many crafts made by regional artisans: Ropes of ceramic red and green chilies that could be draped on wooden boxes; market bags  stamped with images of the Virgin and Frida Kahlo; embroidered tablemats made of palm branches; classic animal miniatures and tin figures from Oaxaca—all of which can be great souvenirs for your guests.

3. Papel picado is a decorative craft made out of paper, cut into elaborate designs. Common themes includes birds, flowers, and skeletons. They are used  for both secular and religious occasions, such as Easter, Christmas, the Day of the Dead, as well as during weddings and quinceañeras.

4. Mariachis bring the best of Mexican music to the party and guests always enjoy listening to them; their elaborate charro costumes make for excellent photos (don’t forget getting a bridal portrait with the group).

5. Color!!! Lots of color! Add color with the centerpieces and flowers—chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, lisianthus, and red gladiolus. They’re bold, beautiful, and budget-friendly.
