Gardens of Domaine de la Baume

Formal French gardens of Domaine de la Baume

If sand between your toes mostly just irritates you, about the only thing better than a garden wedding may be a garden wedding in the South of France. And wow, does the Domaine de la Baume, a newly opened boutique hotel near the Provencal village of Tourtour, have a garden.

Sharing the 99-acre property with an olive grove, truffle oaks, ponds, and, just to make it perfect, waterfalls, it is a very formal French-style garden, of course, and is seemingly made for the rustling of white taffeta and the popping of champagne corks.

The 18th century manor house-style structure was once the home of expressionist painter Bernard Buffett, which may account for the splashes of color, beginning with the blue shutters, outside and in.

As your guests might expect, the Domaine de la Baume acreage began as a farm, so they’ll discover honey fresh from the hotel’s beehives, horses in the pasture, and Chef François Martin in his kitchen garden. But what might pleasantly surprise them are the tennis courts, pool, and, for the annoyingly ambitious, mountain bike trails.

The hotel is the third Provence property for the luxury group Maisons & Hotels Sibuet, one of the other two being La Bastide de Marie, near Menerbes, which itself, when we visited last year, seemed ideal for an intimate destination wedding.

This is Provence, after all, so the Domaine de la Baume does not come cheap. Rooms begin at $576 for a double. But that includes not having to worry about sinking your heels in the sand. – Bob Payne
