An outdoor wedding reception at the St. Regis Bahia Beach
There are a couple of major advantages to a destination wedding in Puerto Rico. It’s easy to get to, with San Juan home to the Caribbean’s biggest and most accessible airport, which means many of your guests can leave home in the morning and be sipping a pina colada beside the pool by lunchtime. And since it’s a U.S. territory, nobody’s going to have to fuss with passports or currency exchange. But until recently, the island’s inventory of romantic, world-class resorts was pretty meager.
Enter the St. Regis Bahia Beach, which opened just three years ago on 483 pristine acres of lush, tropical foliage at the base of El Yunque National Forest (less than an hour’s drive from the airport). The designers stayed true to the former coconut estate’s history, with low-slung plantation houses and some of the most exotic, sumptuous gardens on American soil. It’s the kind of backdrop that amazing wedding photos are made of.
You can tie the knot on the two-mile beach or have a sophisticated ceremony on the Governor Suite’s patio, but a lot of couples choose to gather their guests on the estate lawn, where the staff will erect a white gazebo to frame the ocean view.
There’s a Robert Trent Jones Jr. course for the golfers and a stellar spa for the indulgers, plus a wealth of relaxing options for everyone. (Frozen grapes served as you lounge by the pool? Now that’s the ticket.) If you’ve got a few families on your list, they’ll be delighted by the kids club.
But what if you want a wedding just for the two of you? The resort recently launched a package specifically tailored to intimate ceremonies, including a private oceanfront ceremony, photography session, wedding cake, and a romantic wedding dinner for the wedding couple. If there’s a more romantic way to elope, we’ve yet to hear about it.
