A glorious Long Island greenhouse

A glorious Long Island greenhouse

The North Fork of Long Island is one glorious spot for a destination wedding. Who says? Maria McBride, a former style editor at Brides magazine and author of such books as The Perfect Wedding and Perfect Wedding Details,  who returns to the sleepy area time and again to stage picturesque ceremonies and stunning receptions. Here’s how she describes it:

“About 100 miles due east of New York City, the North Fork is  equal parts surf and turf, brimming with award-winning vineyards, pleasant beaches, charming towns, and small farms. With an agricultural renaissance in full swing, this bucolic end of the island is the perfect place to start a life together.”

McBride has recently launched Peconic Productions, a location source and event planning business named for the Peconic Bay, one of her favorite wedding backdrops. Specializing in retro, rustic, and traditional locations with character, McBride sources photo-perfect sites with amenities that are ideal for celebrations. Here are three of her favorites.

“A glass greenhouse nestled along a riverfront is surrounded by barns and rustic buildings and sweeping lawns with room for tents. The greenhouse is perfect for cocktails or a ceremony, and can accommodate 50 guests for a seated meal.”

Zig-zag fencing adds architectural interest to a Long Island winery

“An award-winning winery has an architecturally delightful running fence that abuts a lush corn field. The lawn is a beautiful setting for a tent, plus there is a small barn to welcome guests before they carry on to the celebration. Perfect for 75 to 150 people.”

“This grand historic home dating to the 1850s has a ballroom, a central hall with a sweeping staircase, plus bride’s and groom’s suites. It’s surrounded by sweeping lawns. Just add a tent for a gala wedding and invite 300 people you love.”

McBride can help you find anything from a vintage automobile for your grand entrance to a poolside patio for a lobster bake to local lodging so the city folks can rusticate all weekend. And she works with some of the best photographers, caterers, and florists in the business, so all you have to do is show up and smile.
