Indian wedding cake at Atlantis

A vibrant Indian wedding cake at Atlantis, the Bahamas

Atlantis resort’s Hindu-style weddings

Part of you has your heart set on a traditional Indian ceremony. And part of you craves the ease of an island wedding. Thanks to Lord Ganesh (and a clever marketing department), a new event division at Atlantis, the megaresort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, specializes in Hindu-style weddings. So you can satisfy your soul with traditional ceremony elements (mandaps, thrones, malas, a firepit for the seven circuits of the Holy Fire), feast on Chef Rajesh Kattaria’s spectacular cuisine, and bask in all that Bahamian sunshine.

Pyaar Atlantis (the resort’s dedicated Hindu wedding service) offers several packages. Saagar is the most basic, covering all the necessities and then some–marriage license to ceremonial elements to plenty of photography. Things get a bit more elaborate in the Aakash plan, which includes hair, makeup, videography, and assorted add-ons (Bollywood soundtrack, anyone?). You can throw in a non-Hindu ceremony, if you want a bit of Western flair; treat your guests to one of aforementioned Chef Kattaria’s feasts (black rich lentis stew, Indian spiced baby eggplant, lamb and green pea curry); and pull out all the stops with a poolside reception for 500 of your nearest and dearest, if your pockets are deep enough.

All of which is terrific for you two as the wedding couple, of course. (Particularly with a dedicated wedding coordinator to pull it all together.) But what makes this such a enviable destination for guests is Atlantis’s genius as a vacation spot. Half hotel, half theme park, it’s got an entire water park for the kids, plenty of sun-and-sip areas for the sybarites, and a casino for those who like a little blackjack with their beach time. Not to mention that it’s dang easy to reach, with tons of direct flights from the U.S. mainland.

A traditional Indian wedding in a supremely untraditional setting? For free-spirited couples who enjoy the art of the mix, it might just be the place.
