Marriage under the meteors: a stargazer's wedding at Scotland's Kirroughtree House | Destination W

For starry-eyed couples looking for some marital fireworks, here’s a wedding idea: Starting at dusk on the nights of December 13th and 14th, the annual Geminid meteor shower will streak the heavens with as many as 50 meteors per hour—and thanks to a new moon, the sky this year will be extra-inky. Though visible from anyplace in North America with wide-open vistas, the shooting stars will be particularly brilliant in Scotland’s Galloway Forest Park—one of only five Dark Sky Parks in the world and one of the darkest spots in Europe.

Here’s the plan: Marry at nearby Kirroughtree House with appropriate revelry (get started with your plans this second—the rooms are filling fast), then repair to lawn chairs and snuggle in blankets, sipping red wine as the cosmos whirls overhead. Or jump into Range Rovers as the visiting astronomer takes you into the darkest part of the Sky Park. And what if–heavens!–the clouds conspire to foil your plans? Kirroughtree’s splendid history (Robbie Burns was a regular), local fare (Mull of Galloway lobster, Wigtown Bay wild fowl), and half-tester beds should soothe you, regardless of what’s happening overhead. You’ll thank your lucky stars.
